Sober House Rules
Cayuga House: Sober Living Guidelines
Structure and accountability are the backbone of recovery. At Cayuga House, we balance both with a strong sense of community. While we do our best to make sober living feel supportive and uplifting, we never lose sight of the fact that recovery is serious—and for many, it’s life-saving.
Here’s what residents can expect:

No substances allowed
Drugs, alcohol, or any intoxicating substances (including kratom, kava, Delta-8, or other “legal highs”) are strictly prohibited on the property.

Respect and personal integrity
Recovery means showing up honestly and treating each other with kindness. Lying, manipulation, and harmful behavior won’t be tolerated. Boundaries—both personal and physical—must be respected at all times.

Active treatment participation
All residents must be enrolled in a current PHP or IOP program while living at Cayuga House. Staying engaged in professional treatment is part of the agreement.

Meeting attendance
Recovery takes effort. That includes mandatory participation in house meetings and scheduled outside meetings—unless an exception is approved due to illness, injury, or conflict.

No weapons or violent behavior
Weapons of any kind—firearms, knives, batons, etc.—are not allowed. Threatening language or physical violence will result in immediate action. We fight addiction, not each other.

Resolving conflict respectfully
If serious issues arise, residents are expected to bring concerns to staff for resolution. Staff decisions are final.

No ‘negative contracts’ — Accountability is a must
If you witness behavior that violates the rules, say something. Keeping quiet about unsafe or harmful actions is considered a breach of the agreement.

Privacy and searches
We aim to protect dignity while maintaining safety. Random or targeted searches may occur to ensure a secure environment.

Drug screening
Residents agree to random or situational drug tests at the discretion of staff. These screenings help maintain trust and safety for all.

Visitor policy
Visitors must be pre-approved by staff. Immediate family, sponsors, sober supports, mental health professionals and probation officers are allowed with prior approval when appropriate. Approved visitors are only permitted in shared spaces—not bedrooms—and overnight visits are not allowed under any circumstances.

Curfews
To support structure, all residents must follow curfew: 10:00 pm on weekdays, 11:00 pm on weekends. Exceptions require prior approval.

Smoking and vaping
Smoking and vaping (nicotine only) are allowed in designated outdoor areas. Respect others and clean up after yourself.

No gambling allowed
All forms of gambling—including sports betting or card games—are strictly prohibited. These activities can be triggering and are not aligned with recovery.
How Sober Living Helps
The sober house is where you begin and end every day. Where you retire at night to process what you learned about addiction recovery and discovered about yourself. It’s where you grow, benefiting from the fellowship of others on the same journey as you.
Sober houses offer a place where people in early recovery cohabitate and support each other. They have structure and accountability to ensure safety and success. The rules include things like curfews, mandatory meetings and active enrollment in outpatient treatment. Of course, drugs, alcohol, weapons and gambling are all against the rules.
How Sober Living Ties It All Together
Recovery begins with leaving chaos behind—but that’s only the start. It’s not just about escaping addiction; it’s about rebuilding yourself from the inside out. At Cayuga House, we believe recovery is a transformation—a rebirth into a life that’s brighter, stronger, and more purposeful.
Exceptional sober living programs in FL and NJ do more than provide a bed—they build resilience. At Cayuga House, residents find a true sense of belonging rooted in structure, accountability, and compassion. This isn’t just housing. It’s a recovery community that mirrors the warmth of home while offering meaningful exercise and wellness opportunities that support both body and spirit.
