Sober Living Q&A
Here are answers to some of the questions we’re asked the most about how recovery housing in NJ and FL works. If don’t find your answer here, just give us a call at (772) 777-8717 or email info@cayugahousing.com.
Do You Have to Be Sober to Get Into Sober Living?
To live in a sober living home, you can’t be in active addiction. You do not necessarily have to be able to pass a drug test—-some drugs, like marijuana and benzos can stay in the body for a while.
But, you can’t be actively using drugs or drinking and move into any reputable recovery house. Many of the best sober houses in NJ and Florida also require you to be in PHP or IOP treatment while you live there. Remember, sober living isn’t a substitute for substance abuse treatment—-it is not medical care. Sober living is meant to support a program of recovery.
Does Insurance Pay for Sober Living Homes in NJ?
No, health insurance doesn’t pay for sober housing because it’s considered “room and board”, not medical treatment. But, the best sober houses usually work with a local outpatient treatment center. Insurance covers the treatment and the combination of PHP/IOP drug treatment and good sober living is a powerful solution to addiction.
How Much Does Sober Housing Cost?
The price of recovery housing can range anywhere from $200 a week to $600 a week for a pretty fancy one with lots of features. The price is based on location, how nice the house is, what’s included, how much staffing and services are offered, etc. Most sober homes require a deposit and rent is paid weekly, rather than monthly.
Can People Visit You in Sober Living?
Visitors are discouraged from most sober living houses. When they do allow them, it’s under strict rules. It’s usually only going to be immediate family, a sponsor or sober support, mental health professional or a probation office.
Even then, visitors may not be allowed inside. If they are, they are not allowed in guests’ bedrooms. Any sober house that doesn’t follow these rules isn’t one that we’d recommend to anyone. They are important for resident safety and security.

How do I get into Cayuga House?
The first step is a phone call so we can get to know each other a little. During the call, we’ll help you figure out if Cayuga House is a good fit for you or your loved one. Residents must be presently enrolled in an approved PHP or IOP substance use disorder treatment program.
Note that insurance does not pay for sober housing, so you’ll need a deposit and weekly rent for room and board, etc. But first things first—give us a call!
What are the requirements to become a resident?
To become a resident here, you’ll need to be an adult 18 years of age or older. You will also need to be enrolled in approved partner partial hospitalization (PHP) or intensive outpatient (IOP) addiction treatment for the duration of your stay with us.
Our recovery housing is designed to be part of an overall recovery plan, not a standalone option. We are not a medical facility.
Where are the Cayuga House sober living homes located?
Our Florida sober houses are located in Port St. Lucie, in South Florida’s Treasure Coast region. We offer separate men’s and women’s housing. In New Jersey, our recovery housing is in Marlton.
Please note, for privacy and security we cannot accept walk-ins. You must call in first for screening and be enrolled in an approved partner PHP or IOP addiction program before you can move in. We can help you with all of that though—-our process is pretty straightforward!
We ask that you do not visit the property unannounced. We cannot admit anyone to the sober house as a walk-in. Thanks!
